This Celica is the
first of
Seven Generations of Celica . The first generation was from '71-'77.
I did some
research on the Weight of the
5M as compared to the 7 and the
20R. What I found , The 5M weighed in at only 340lb, while the
18R,
20R and 22R
all weigh 318 lb. compared to the
7MGTE at 456
lb, it was easy to see why the 7M swap would cause so many
problems.
Also, the W50 transmission has a
steel case, the
W58 transmission has an aluminum one - I'm
told it makes about 50 lbs difference. The |

|
W58 comes with the 5M
engine. I replaced the oil pan with a pan off of a 7MGE (this pan is
bigger than the 5M stock pan, it takes about 6 quarts of oil)
As far as the engine goes, I planned on at some point
supercharging it as opposed to turbo. I prefer the immediate
response of the supercharger as opposed to laggy turbos. The
supercharger I had in mind was Toyota made from the mid engine
van. I chose this because there are kits available for the
conversion from the van to the I-6 5MGE and 7MGE. This
supercharger should run 8 lb of boost and would provide plenty
of power for the car.
I am not the biggest fan of drum brakes, so I am going to
replace the entire rear end with a '80-'81 Supra rear end,
giving me 4 wheel discs and a limited slip differential.
Need to go to junk yard to find radiator that has an inlet on
the driver side.
I am now working on the braking and handling. I am thinking of
replacing the stock brake booster with an '81 Supra booster.
I am looking at the front struts. I was thinking of upgrading it
to '81 struts and discs.
The wheels are from the junk yard--14"x7" from an '84 Supra.

Just got back from the
junk yard...no radiator. I did pick up fenders, a hood from a '73,
and the shelf that goes under the glove box. (See
Wrecking/Junk Yard Etiquette -Let's
work to keep them open!)

This month I will be working on the
